retracts right back to clip.The only thing i dont like about this lead is that it retracts right to the clip that goes onto the dogs collar. It could do with an extra bit. I have added a 30cm extension so it does not get too close when i drop it (which i do when juggling all 3 dogs)Other than that it is a great lead.
